THE SCENT OF RAIN IN THE BALKANS
Published in 1986 by Vuk Karadzic, THE
SCENT OF RAIN IN THE BALKANS (506pp., 22nd edition)
became an instant bestseller. Winner of the First Prize
awarded by the prestigious Association of Jewish Communities
in Yugoslavia, the novel describes the historic period
in the Balkans from the beginning of World War I, 1914,
to the end of World War II in 1945 through the lives
and destinies of the Saloms, a Sephardic Jewish family
from Sarajevo. The leading characters are the five courageous
Salom sisters whose struggle to fulfill personal desires
and aspirations run contrary to the strict conventions
of the multicultural and religious societies - Bosnian
Jew, Muslim, Serbian Orthodox, and Catholic - of the
time, living side by side in the small town of Sarajevo.
A ballet based on the novel premiered on the Sarajevo
National Opera stage in 1991. The Scent of Rain
in the Balkans has also been adapted to both television
and the theater.

"REMNANTS"
Thirty-three short stories. Published in 2009 by "ALNARI".
STORIES COME FIRST AND ONLY STORIES REMAIN
Gordana Kuić’s Remnants are at once intimate and rational,
random and shaped by destiny, strange and powerful,
concrete and elegiac, anecdotal and shocking. Speaking
of today, yesterday and the future, these stories are
many-faceted, as the writer tells us at the beginning
of her new book, but above all they come from the heart
to intrigue the reader.
Written in her own distinctive, recognizable and much-loved
style and in the spirit of her seven-volume epic, beginning
with The Scent of Rain in the Balkans and ending with
The Ballad of Bohoreta, this first collection of short
stories by Gordana Kuić casts light on hitherto obscure
passages from the lives of some of the well-known heroes
already dear to her readers, but also on important episodes
of her own life, as she relates the tales of people
great and small.
Remnants is an examination of life in the Balkans,
Europe and the world, projected onto the broad screen
of history by an ever careful and close observer of
the fate of ancestors, friends, acquaintances, but above
all of the characters that spring from her imagination
and continue to live on in us, thanks to the talent
and industry of contemporary Serbia’s most widely read
author.

"ALNARI"
"On the Other Side of the Night"
The many readers of Remnants will welcome Gordana Kuić’s
latest collection From the Other Side of the Night as
the natural continuation of the peculiar magic she weaves
to seduce us.
Here are seventeen new stories from this contemporary
Balkan Scherazade, so varied in content that the only
common denominators are the author’s keen imagination,
her acute observation of people and life, her sense
of history and trust in the written traces of human
transience. They follow the logic of the hearts and
minds of a range of characters in various countries,
times and life-changing situations, and the author’s
own.
Kuić’s refined sensitivity is coupled with an uncompromising
attitude towards the basic values of our civilisation.
However the challenges and spirit of the times may change,
their measure remains the individual, whose actions,
words and example are of vital importance, if not for
the future of the world, then at least for the future
of our own descendants.
So why From the Other Side of the Night? Simply, because
on the other side of night lies day: light, faith, hope
and optimistic beginnings. However, in the belief that
I spy a deeper meaning cocooned in most of the stories
which certainly exude optimism, humour and a captivating
lightness, I would still say that on the other side
lies night, the night of eternal re-examination of the
soul.

"A Novel in Pictures"
Following two superb books of short
stories, Gordana Kuić’s eighth novel returns to the
hub of her particular universe. The river that was a
wellspring thirty years ago flows again, raising many
of the queries and passions of her captivating opus
to re-explore them in depth, with all their potent images
of a vital coexistence that respects differences and
nurtures the fundamental human values.
Her tale this time centres on the lives of Jews and
Roma in Bitola (Macedonia) and Belgrade. If the story
were not firmly situated in the late 1930s, the reader
could sit back and enjoy the multiplicity of true-to-life
characters, the sparkling dialogue and colourful profusion
of language, custom, experience and various mentalities.
However, over this primal energy of national, family
and individual life looms the dark cloud of the Holocaust.
It was the Holocaust that declared the non-existence
of God to many of its innocent victims, but also the
truth of the existence of the Righteous among the Nations,
those individuals who in saving a persecuted fellow
human at risk to their own lives, save the world and
restore faltering faith in humanity.
Deftly interweaving the drama of her characters, whose
lives and deaths are at the mercy of an avalanche of
organised evil opposed only by the heroism of individuals
determined to resist it, Gordana Kuić’s vision is a
compelling balance between good and evil, dark and light,
absurdity and commonsense. She reminds me of Imre Kertész,
Varlam Shalamov, Solzhenityzn, writers who have borne
witness to the darkest passages of human history but
in such a way that critics have rightly noted the „reaches
of happiness“ in their work.

THE
BLOSSOM OF LINDEN IN THE BALKANS

15th Edition) is the best-selling sequel of the Salom
family saga at the end of one generation and the beginning
of a new one born during World War II. The novel describes
the dramatic changes in Yugoslav society from 1945-1965
triggered by the victory of Communism which decimated
the pre-war middle class and greatly influenced the
lives of its children. |

TWILIGHT
IN THE BALKANS
Published in 1995 by Narodna Knjiga, TWILIGHT
IN THE BALKANS (455pp,. 12th Edition) a runaway
bestseller, describes the entangled emotional triangle
of Vera Korac, the last member of the Salom-Korac family.
Played out against the background of the tragic disintegration
of her country, the former Yugoslavia, 1990-1991, the
novel, winner of Gold Bestseller Award, completes the
trilogy. |

GHOSTS
OVER THE BALKANS
Published in 1997, GHOSTS OVER THE BALKANS,
(334 pp) tenth edition, is the best-selling epilogue
to the Balkan trilogy. It closes the circle of the 20th
century Salom family saga by ending the stories of all
its characters. The novel, in the form of a light satyr
play, allows the story to jump into the past and the
future. The last episode delves into the 15th Century
Spanish Inquisition. In doing so, it introduces the
topic of the novel which will follow, thus becoming
a peculiar link between two trilogies, both as an Epilogue
to the first trilogy and the Prologue to the second.
Gold Bestseller Award winner. |

THE
LEGEND OF LUNA LEVI
Published in 1999 by Narodna Knjiga, THE
LEGEND OF LUNA LEVI, (448pp) a best-selling love
story and family saga in its eighth edition, follows
the steps of the last Jews to leave Spain on July 31,
1492, marking the end of the Great Expulsion. It follows

THE
FAIRY TALE ABOUT BENJAMIN BARUH
Published in 2002, Narodna Knjiga, THE FAIRY
TALE OF BENJAMIN BARUH (563pp), sixth edition takes
place in the Republic of Dubrovnik and three cities
in the Ottoman Empire; Sarajevo, Travnik and Belgrade,
during the second half of the 17th century. The fate
of the Atijas, Perera, Albinun and Baruh families are
tightly interwoven. The framework of the novel is given
by its story-teller, Bohoreta, who writes a manuscript
about her heritage intended for her two sons, Leon and
Barkohba, caught in the streets of Sarajevo in 1941
and sent to the concentration camp of Jasenovac. The
mother, Bohoreta, holds on to the belief her two boys
will one day return. This novel has been competing with
I.B.Singer and Imre Kertes on the bestseller lists. |

THE
BALLAD ABOUT BOHORETA
Published in 2006 by Politika-Narodna knjiga,
THE BALLAD OF BOHORETA, (263 pp) ends the second trilogy
by bringing it in time to the first one, i.e. the end
of the 19th century. While the first trilogy covered
the 20th century, the second deals with the period of
Sephardic existence from the 15th to the 20th century.
Ghosts Over the Balkans is therefore a specific link
between the two trilogies that represents an Epilogue
to the first and a Prologue to the second. The Ballad
of Bohoreta takes place in Istanbul, Sarajevo and Paris
and it follows the life of Laura Levi-Papo Bohoreta,
a famous playwright, historian, and researcher of the
Sepahrdic tradition in Bosnia, her growing up, education
and later on her vivid participation in the cultural
life of the Sarajevo Sephardic community. Her correspondence
with Manuel Manrique de Lara, a renowned Spanish composer
and musicologist describes the depth of a sophisticated
platonic love. |
